"Look around you, choose five things nearby (choose normal names for them that other people will understand), list them and comment on them: what is it, how it ended up nearby, and why you need it."
1) Water bottle containing something that looks like iced tea : I don't have any idea how it ended up here, who it belongs to, why it's on my desk. I certainly don't need it.
2) Write-on transparency film : for writing up comps problems for Geller's class.
3) Toothpaste : it belongs to L_p, I believe. I can't comment on what he uses it for.
4) Krazy glue : it is here hoping that someday I will get around fixing my copy of Dummit & Foote.
5) Computer : I need it so that I can post idiotic things on LJ. |

Pure Nerd 73 % Nerd, 4% Geek, 30% Dork | For The Record:
A Nerd is someone who is passionate about learning/being smart/academia.
A Geek is someone who is passionate about some particular area or subject, often an obscure or difficult one.
A Dork is someone who has difficulty with common social expectations/interactions.
You scored better than half in Nerd, earning you the title of: Pure Nerd.
The times, they are a-changing. It used to be that being exceptionally smart led to being unpopular, which would ultimately lead to picking up all of the traits and tendences associated with the "dork." No-longer. Being smart isn't as socially crippling as it once was, and even more so as you get older: eventually being a Pure Nerd will likely be replaced with the following label: Purely Successful.
Congratulations!
|
My test tracked 3 variables How you compared to other people your age and gender: | You scored higher than 86% on nerdiness | | You scored higher than 1% on geekosity | | You scored higher than 44% on dork points |

| | disappointed | ] | Okay, so I "didn't quite pass the comps exam" this time around. So I'll get it next time. But what if I don't? There's so much unknown. And it would have given me such peace of mind to have passed this time.
This is the first time in my life I've ever not passed anything. I'm not really sure how to deal with it. It's confusing. Perhaps the most difficult part of this to deal with is that I should have passed, I was adequately prepared, and I was quite capable of giving correct solutions to several problems that I missed. On Thursday, I simply froze up. My old nemesis ANXIETY came and grabbed me and filled my mind with panic instead of productive reasoning.
But this is what life is, right? One challenge after another. And I have so much to be happy for even in the midst of the disappointments and difficulties.
Damn, I'm having mood swings. I'm going between disappointed, sullen, hopeless, and content, optimistic, peaceful.
Why am I even posting all of this on LJ? |

I've noticed from the comments that perhaps my previous post calls for some explanation:
Main Entry: moldy Pronunciation: 'mOl-dE Function: adjective Inflected Form(s): mold·i·er; -est 1 : of, resembling, or covered with a mold-producing fungus 2 a : being old and moldering : CRUMBLING b : ANTIQUATED, FUSTY - mold·i·ness noun
Main Entry: crap·py Pronunciation: 'kra-pE Function: adjective Inflected Form(s): crap·pi·er; -est slang : markedly inferior in quality : LOUSY
Main Entry: 1dwarf Pronunciation: 'dworf Function: noun Inflected Form(s): plural dwarfs /'dworfs/; also dwarves /'dworvz/ Usage: often attributive Etymology: Middle English dwerg, dwerf, from Old English dweorg, dweorh; akin to Old High German twerg dwarf 1 a : a person of unusually small stature; especially : one whose bodily proportions are abnormal b : an insignificant person 2 : an animal or plant much below normal size 3 : a small legendary manlike being who is usually misshapen and ugly and skilled as an artificer 4 : a star (as the sun) of ordinary or low luminosity and relatively small mass and size - dwarf·ish /'dwor-fish/ adjective - dwarf·ish·ly adverb - dwarf·ish·ness noun - dwarf·like /'dwor-"flIk/ adjective - dwarf·ness /'dworf-n&s/ noun
So, does it make more sense now? I am a star of ordinary luminosity and relatively small size of markedly inferior quality that resembles a mold producing fungus.
Was that so complicated? |

| In search of... |
[Jul. 8th, 2005|06:03 pm] |
I'm looking for a closed rectifiable curve \gamma:[0,1]\rightarrow\mathbb{C} such that for any integer N there is a point in \mathbb{C} for which it's winding number is N. I've had some ideas but none of them quite seem to work out (either it's not closed, in which case this doesn't make any sense anyway, or it's not rectifiable). Any ideas? |

| | cynical | ] | Only two days now until I leave NJ and head to Ann Arbor!
How can people be so naive as to make a statement such as...
"The Democratic party is full of immoral self-hating communists, but the Republicans are upstanding honest people who do their best to improve the country."
OR
"Republicans are selfish, power hungry racists, but the Democrats really care about people."
OR
"Republicans and Democrats aren't really that different, they're both selfish and power hungry, but the Green party, now that's where the good selfless politicians are."
OR
::Insert statement in favor of libretarians::
OR
::Insert statement in favor of socialists::

etc., etc., etc.
Am I too cynical? |

I just got back from lunch at Friendly's (Amy, I thought of you when I asked for A1 to go with my fries) and mini-golf with my lil' sis, Nikki. I got 3 holes in one! Hehe, I was rather proud of myself. It's also ridiculously hot outside, very close to or maybe even at 90. |

| Enlightenment |
[Jun. 10th, 2005|06:22 pm] |
| [ | Current Mood |
| | contemplative | ] | I've come to some very obvious and helpful conclusions over the past few weeks. You know all the little worries and anxieties that come up in life? Not the big once-in-a-lifetime things, but the little things. Nervous about this, worried about that, anxious about something else. Well, here's what I've realized: they're NEVER going to stop. Ever. There will never be a day that I will be able to wake up and have absolutely nothing to worry about. So there's no point in trying to make that day arrive. My effort is better spent trying to not let these little things affect the overall quality of my life.
Now, I know that to the rest of you, who are far more mature and enlightened than I am, this seems rather obvious, and you've probably known it for quite a while. But to challenged me, it's really quite a breakthrough. I'm glad that I've had this revelation.
Now I'm going to go watch Napoleon Dynamite with my mom. Peace out. |

Man, I got to drive a big ol' cargo van today, up north about 75 miles to pick up the mattress. It was fun, makes me wanna get a truck. The new bed is awesome. And fuckin heavy.
Also tonight, or rather this afternoon, I went to the local gym and signed up for a 2 week membership (and they charged me $55!). I hadn't exercised very much the last couple weeks, and it's about time I get back into the habit. |
